Luxembourg 1858 Order of The Oak Crown

Order of The Oak Crown
Netherlands Orders of Knighthood Letter   Luxembourg State Archives Letter
1856 William Prince of Orange Letter   William Prince of Orange Signature

An early example of this decoration, awarded to Henry Attwell in 1858, who at that time was an English teacher in Leiden, and whose students included William Prince of Orange. An original letter signed by the Prince, and dated 1856 refers to one particular lesson being cancelled because the Prince was "forced" to go to the Hague. In 1973 the family, not knowing precisely what the decoration was awarded for, or when it was conferred, contacted the Dutch authorities to obtain information. Two letters were received (pictured), the letter from the Prince being handed down within the family since 1856. This award is rare to foreigners, and particularly so to a Briton. Most awards to foreigners at the time would be to Royalty or senior diplomats. This medal is made of gold and enamel, measuring 3.5cm x 3.5cm. There is some chipping to the white enamel but overall the medal is in good condition. The original case has a scrape underneath.
